Selection of games using cryptocurrencies or blockchain

Introduction

What is the point of using the blockchain to play a video game? There are many reasons:

  • Accumulate cryptos
  • Have full possession of your assets
  • Use the same object in several games
  • A certain level of immutability

These arguments are those put forward by the concept of “ Play to earn ”, where the goal of the game is to be able to be rewarded by playing.

Interested? Not so fast… To avoid confusion, it is important to understand the difference between a “Crypto” and a game “Blockchain” game .

Crypto or Blockchain game?

Because words matter, knowing how to assess the level of decentralization of the games that I will present below is fundamental.

The definition I give is purely arbitrary, but will allow you to make a distinction and not fall into the trap of deceptive marketing.

A “Crypto” game is a game that will reward you directly in cryptocurrencies during or after your game. Very often in a wallet directly integrated into the game, sometimes by sending a transaction to a wallet for which you have the keys.

A “Blockchain” game, on the other hand, will have its interactions which will be mostly stored on the blockchain. The items you own in the game must therefore be in the form of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT).

👉 What is a non-fungible token (NFT) or non-fungible token?

So how far are you willing to trust developers to manage your assets?

Presentation of "Crypto" games

Here is a small non-exhaustive list of games that will only require an internet connection (and patience):

Birdchain

It is an app you can install from playstore that allows you to play games like the ones on the screen below. you get rewarded free bird token for your efforts

Crypto Idle Miner

Crypto Idle Miner

  • Blockchain: Tron (token HORA)
  • Platform: smartphone (IOS and Android)

Crypto Idle Miner is a game whose theme is… cryptocurrency mining! So no, you are not going to be able to mine Bitcoin with your smartphone.
On the other hand, the goal is to develop mining farms in different buildings. Each building has its own mining algorithm, the last being SHA-256.

The fun side of learning which algorithm is associated with which crypto is very valuable, and there are regular events inviting you to return to the game.

If you don't know the “Idle” style, it's very simple: the goal is to improve your characteristics (here, your mining rigs) to earn more income to improve your characteristics again.

It's the kind of game that works without you having to leave the app open.

HORA rewards are determined based on your world performance ranking. There are also promo codes to get a number of them directly.

Bitcoin Bounce

Bitcoin Bounce

  • Blockchain: Bitcoin
  • Platform: smartphone (Android)

Bitcoin Bounce is a platform game where the goal will be to go as far as possible without falling into the void. Along the way, you'll be able to collect tickets, which will get you into a daily lottery to earn Satoshis via the Lightning Network straight to your wallet.

As you progress in the game, you will be able to unlock new skins, but this will have no impact on your earnings.

A fairly simple concept, therefore, but effective!

Mintgox

Mintgox

  • Blockchain: Bitcoin
  • Platform: Web browser

Magic Internet Gathering is a platform that offers events around games using the Lightning Network. Here are a few :

- Sats Stacker is a “Coin machine” that can be found in fairgrounds, with the difference that each coin obtained earns 100 satoshis .

- Sarutobi is a game where you have to send your monkey as far as possible in the air to collect Satoshis in flight (large Gold and Silver coins).

- Agar is inspired by the game Agar.io , the goal is to eat the other cells to be the only survivor. A little anecdote, in Japanese “Oagari yo” means “go ahead, taste”. Coincidence?

- Raiki is a 2D fighting game where you can interact with characters through the Lightning Network.

These games are only open during event periods, so stay alert on announcements!

Presentation of "Blockchain" games

These games have the particularity of having less instant winnings. Once the assets have been obtained in your portfolio, you will then have to resell them on a Marketplace!

Bitcoin Hodler

Bitcoin Hodler

  • Blockchain : Ethereum (standard ERC-1155)
  • Platform: smartphone (Android and in test on IOS)

If you liked Flappy Bird, you're going to like Bitcoin Hodler. The goal is to go as far as possible and recover (or avoid) various objects along the way.

Among these items you will find satoshis (which have no real value), coins bearing the image of a crypto, Forks and Taxes.

Depending on the index of FUD or Moon, the scenery will be tilted in one direction or the other, making the difficulty more or less high.

The NFTs can be obtained according to your ability to achieve the various successes of the game, and will unlock various bonuses or skins.

Brave Frontier Heroes

Brave Frontier Heroes

  • Blockchain: Ethereum
  • Platform: Web browser, smartphone (Android and IOS)

Developed by the team at My Crypto Heroes , the game offers a team right from the start to start playing.
The playstyle is a kind of RPG where you have to send your team on a mission to collect Spheres (weapons and armor from the game). The missions are fully automated.

The spheres can be exchanged for ZEL (the in-game currency), and once you have accumulated enough of them, you will be able to summon a new hero. Each of these summoned heroes are NFTs that can be sold later.

If you're lucky, one of the spheres you can get during your missions will be an NFT! Otherwise, they will be “Replica”, and will only be used to be exchanged for ZEL or to improve your heroes.

Gods Unchained

Gods Unchained

  • Blockchain: Ethereum
  • Platform: PC

The Trading Card Game par excellence currently, the gameplay is directly inspired by Hearthstone.
At first, no need to bother to build a custom deck, the Starters Decks do their job very well to ensure you some victories.

When you play in “Ranked Constructed”, your ranking will determine in each phase if you are eligible to receive Packs containing 5 cards each. You will also get these packs every time you level up.

Once you have obtained duplicate cards, you can transform them into NFTs by going through the Forge.

You can then sell them directly on OpenSea or the Marketplace integrated into the game!

Conclusion

These games have three things in common:

Although crypto games are very easy to access, don't expect to make a fortune with it! As for blockchain games, remember that your asset will only be valuable when you have successfully sold it.

There are obviously many others, but the vast majority of them are still at the Alpha or Beta stage.
